Electron Acceleration at Pulsar Wind Termination Shocks

چکیده

We study the acceleration of electrons and positrons at an electromagnetically modified, ultrarelativistic shock in the context of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). We simulate the outflow produced by an obliquely rotating pulsar in proximity of its termination shock with a two-fluid code which uses a magnetic shear wave to mimic the properties of the wind. We integrate electron trajectories in the test-particle limit in the resulting background electromagnetic fields to analyse the injection mechanism. We find that the shock-precursor structure energizes and reflects a sizeable fraction of particles, which becomes available for further acceleration. We investigate the subsequent first-order Fermi process sustained by small-scale magnetic fluctuations with a Monte Carlo code. We find that the acceleration proceeds in two distinct regimes: when the gyro-radius rg exceeds the wavelength of the shear λ, the process is remarkably similar to first-order Fermi acceleration at relativistic, parallel shocks. This regime corresponds to a low density wind which allows the propagation of superluminal waves. When rg < λ, which corresponds to the scenario of driven reconnection, the spectrum is softer. Particle Acceleration in Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae

While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates for the source of cosmic rays, at least to energies up to ∼ 10 eV, it is only over the past several years that direct evidence of such energetic particles in SNRs has been uncovered. X-ray observations of several shell-type SNRs have now revealed sites dominated by nonthermal emission, indicating an electron population w...

New insights into particle acceleration at relativistic transverse shocks

We have investigated the problem of particle acceleration at relativistic transverse shocks within the framework of the Resonant Cyclotron Absorption (RCA) model. This model (Hoshino et al., 1992; Gallant & Arons, 1994), that has been so far considered the most successful at explaining particle acceleration at the pulsar wind termination shock in plerions, applies to a shock transition occurrin...

Chandra Studies of Nonthermal Emission from Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae

While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates as sources of cosmic rays, it is only recently that X-ray observations have identified several shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal emission, thus revealing shock-accelerated electrons with energies extending far beyond the typical thermal spectrum. Two of these SNRs have been detected as sources of VHE γ-rays. In oth...

Shocks and Wind Bubbles Around Energetic Pulsars

The Crab Nebula demonstrates that neutron stars can interact with their environments in spectacular fashion, their relativistic winds generating nebulae observable across the electromagnetic spectrum. At many previous conferences, astronomers have discussed, debated and puzzled over the complicated structures seen in the Crab, but have been limited to treating most other pulsar wind nebulae (PW...

Fast magnetosonic waves in pulsar winds

Fast magnetosonic waves in a magnetically-dominated plasma are investigated. In the pulsar wind, these waves may transport a significant fraction of the energy flux. It is shown that the nonlinear steepening and subsequent formation of multiple shocks is a viable mechanism for the wave dissipation in the pulsar wind. The wave dissipation both in the free pulsar wind and beyond the wind terminat...
